Most diesel Qashqais use the 1.5 dCi or 1.6 dCi engine, both fitted with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the exhaust. The same engines are used in the Juke and X-Trail. The DPF traps soot and burns it off during regeneration, which needs the engine hot and running steadily for several minutes.
A Qashqai that spends its life on school runs, supermarket trips and stop-start traffic rarely gets that chance. Soot builds up until the DPF warning comes on, then the car may lose power and go into limp mode. Other symptoms include the cooling fan running after you switch off, higher fuel use and the engine idling faster than usual while it tries to regenerate.
A blocked DPF is not just an inconvenience. Rising back pressure can damage the turbo, and repeated failed regenerations can dilute the engine oil with diesel, which thins it and speeds up wear. A DPF that has been ignored until it is packed solid may need replacing rather than cleaning.
We look for the reason the DPF is blocking as well as the blockage itself. A faulty pressure sensor, sticking EGR valve, leaking injector or thermostat stuck open can all stop regeneration working. Once any cause is fixed, we run a forced regeneration or clean the filter, check the oil level and condition, and give you simple driving advice to keep it clear.

- Why does my Qashqai DPF keep blocking?
- Short journeys are the usual reason, but a faulty sensor, EGR valve or thermostat can also stop regeneration. We check those first so the problem does not keep coming back.
- Can I clear the DPF by driving on the motorway?
- If the warning has only just come on, 15 to 20 minutes at a steady speed on the M5 or A-roads can help it regenerate. If the car is in limp mode or the light stays on, book it in.
- Does the petrol Qashqai have a DPF?
- Older petrol models do not. Some newer petrol engines have a petrol particulate filter, but they block far less often than diesel DPFs.
