Nissan Qashqai Common Problems (2007–2021)

The Nissan Qashqai has been one of the best-selling cars in the UK for years, and it is built in Sunderland. We see plenty of them in Smethwick, from early first-generation cars to the later J11 model. They are practical, comfortable and generally dependable, but there are some common problems worth knowing about.

DPF blockages on diesel models

The most common problem we see on diesel Qashqais is a blocked diesel particulate filter. The 1.5 dCi and 1.6 dCi engines both have one, and it needs a good steady run now and then to burn off the soot it collects. A Qashqai that only does school runs and local shopping rarely gets that.

The first sign is usually a DPF warning light, followed by loss of power and limp mode if it is ignored. A faulty pressure sensor, EGR valve or thermostat can also stop the DPF regenerating, so it is worth finding the cause rather than just clearing the filter. Caught early, a forced regeneration or clean often sorts it out.

CVT automatic gearbox judder and whine

Automatic Qashqais use a CVT, which Nissan calls Xtronic. It gives smooth, stepless acceleration, but it can develop a judder when pulling away or a whine that rises with speed. Old fluid is a common factor. Nissan does not always make fluid changes obvious in the schedule, so many cars have never had one.

If you notice judder, whining or slipping, get it checked early. A fluid change and reset can help if the gearbox is not badly worn. Once the internal parts are damaged, the repair becomes much bigger.

1.2 DIG-T oil use and timing chain wear

The 1.2 DIG-T turbo petrol fitted to many second-generation Qashqais has a reputation for using oil on some engines. If the oil level drops between services and is not topped up, the timing chain can wear and start to rattle.

Check the dipstick every few weeks. If you need to top up regularly, tell us at your next service so we can keep an eye on it. Regular oil changes with the correct oil are the best protection for the chain.

Other common Qashqai jobs

Manual diesels wear clutches and dual-mass flywheels, especially with stop-start driving. Suspension parts such as front drop links and bushes knock with age, and rear brakes can seize on cars that sit for long periods. Air conditioning is another common job, as condensers at the front of the car can be damaged by stones and corrosion.

Buying a used Qashqai

If you are looking at a used Qashqai, check the service history for regular oil changes and ask what sort of driving it has done. A diesel that has only done short trips is more likely to have DPF trouble ahead, and a petrol may suit that kind of use better.

On automatics, look for smooth pull-away with no judder and listen for whining at motorway speeds. On manual diesels, a rattle at idle that stops when you press the clutch points to a worn dual-mass flywheel.
