The 1.0 EcoBoost three-cylinder petrol went into the Fiesta, Focus, B-Max, C-Max, EcoSport and Transit Connect from 2012. Instead of a dry cambelt or a chain, it uses a toothed belt that runs in the engine oil, often called a wet belt. It is quiet and efficient, but it is sensitive to the wrong oil, overdue oil changes and high mileage.
As the belt ages it can swell and start to break up. Small pieces of rubber collect in the oil pickup strainer in the sump, which restricts oil flow. The first sign is usually an oil pressure warning, sometimes with a rattle or rough running. If the belt fails completely, the valves and pistons can meet, and the repair becomes an engine replacement.
The same engine is also known for coolant problems. Some early cars were recalled over a coolant hose, and an engine that runs low on coolant can overheat and crack the cylinder head. We check the coolant level, the hoses and the expansion tank on every EcoBoost we see, because a small leak caught early is cheap to fix.
Ford has changed the recommended belt interval over the years, and it depends on the age of the car as well as the mileage. We confirm the right interval for your registration, look at your service history and inspect the belt before recommending anything. If the belt is fine, we tell you so.
