Is the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost Reliable?

A clever engine with a mixed reputation
The 1.0 EcoBoost is a small three-cylinder turbo petrol that Ford put in the Fiesta, Focus, B-Max, C-Max, EcoSport, Puma and Transit Connect. When it arrived in 2012 it won awards for being quick, smooth and economical for its size. Since then it has also picked up a reputation for problems. So is it reliable?
The honest answer is that a well-maintained 1.0 EcoBoost can be a good engine, but it is less forgiving of neglect than an older, simpler petrol. The known problems are real, and most of them are either cheap to prevent or cheap to fix early.
The wet belt
Instead of a chain or a dry cambelt, the EcoBoost uses a timing belt that runs in the engine oil. It is quieter and more efficient, but the belt is sensitive to oil quality. As it ages, it can swell and break up. Pieces collect in the oil pickup and restrict oil flow, which leads to low oil pressure warnings and, in the worst cases, engine damage.
Ford has revised the recommended belt interval over the years, and it depends on age as well as mileage. The key point is that the belt must be changed when it is due, and the oil pickup should be checked and cleaned at the same time.
Coolant loss and overheating
The other well-known issue is coolant loss. Earlier engines in particular could suffer from leaking coolant hoses or expansion tanks, and some cars were recalled. If the engine runs low on coolant and overheats, the cylinder head can crack, which is a big repair.
Keeping an eye on the coolant level is the simplest way to avoid this. If you find you are topping it up, do not ignore it. Book a check so the leak can be found while it is still a small job.
Oil: the thing that matters most
Most EcoBoost problems come back to oil. The wet belt is designed around a specific Ford oil approval. The wrong oil, or oil left in too long, speeds up belt wear and turbo wear. We always check the specification for your engine and never use a generic "fits most" oil.
If your car does lots of short trips, consider changing the oil more often than the maximum interval. It costs a little more each year and helps the belt and turbo last longer.
Should you buy one?
A 1.0 EcoBoost with a full service history, evidence of the correct oil and the belt changed at the right time is a sensible buy. One with gaps in its history, signs of coolant loss or an unknown belt history needs checking first. We are happy to look over a car before you buy.
