DSG is the Volkswagen Group name for its dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and Audi calls it S tronic. It is fitted to many Golfs, Polos, Passats, Tiguans, A3s, A4s, Q3s and Q5s, as well as SEAT and Skoda models. There are two main families: the 6-speed and larger 7-speed boxes with wet clutches that run in oil, and the 7-speed DQ200 dry-clutch box used on smaller petrol and diesel engines.
The wet-clutch boxes need their fluid and filter changed at set intervals, commonly around every 40,000 miles. Skipping it lets the fluid break down, which leads to harsh or slurred changes and eventually clutch and mechatronic wear. The dry-clutch DQ200 has no scheduled fluid change for the clutches, but it is known for mechatronic unit faults and clutch judder at low speed.
Typical symptoms are a shudder when pulling away, clunks in slow traffic, a flashing gear display, the car dropping into neutral or refusing to select drive. Left alone, a small fault in the mechatronic unit or clutch can become a full gearbox replacement, which is one of the most expensive repairs on these cars.
