VW and Audi 2.0 TDI EGR and DPF Faults
The 2.0 TDI is a strong engine, but its EGR and DPF systems clog up on cars that mostly do short trips. We find out which part is actually at fault before replacing anything. Book a diagnostic appointment.

VW and Audi 2.0 TDI EGR and DPF Faults with clear advice.
The 2.0 TDI diesel is one of the most common engines we see in Smethwick, fitted to the Golf, Passat, Tiguan, Touran and Transporter, and to the Audi A3, A4, A6, Q3 and Q5. The earlier common-rail engines from around 2009 to 2015 and the later EA288 engines both use an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system and a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to meet emissions rules.
The EGR valve feeds some exhaust gas back into the engine. Over time soot and oil vapour turn into a hard carbon crust that sticks the valve open or shut. Many engines also have an EGR cooler, which can block with soot or leak coolant internally. At the same time, the DPF fills with soot and needs regular hot, steady driving to burn it off. Stop-start driving round Smethwick, Bearwood and the city centre rarely gives it the chance.
Symptoms include an engine management light, loss of power, limp mode, a DPF warning, black smoke, a rough idle and, with a leaking EGR cooler, coolant loss with no drip on the drive. Ignored, a blocked DPF can raise back pressure and harm the turbo, and a leaking cooler can let coolant into the engine.
We read the fault codes and live data, check the EGR valve movement, DPF pressure readings and soot load, and test the cooler for leaks. Often a clean or a forced regeneration is enough. When a part has genuinely failed, we explain why and quote clearly, including whether cleaning or replacement makes more sense for your mileage.
Diagnosis before parts
Live data, DPF pressure and EGR tests show which part has failed, so you do not pay for guesswork.
Clean or replace, honestly
We clean where it will last and replace only where cleaning will not fix it.

Common questions
- Why does my TDI keep going into limp mode?
- On the 2.0 TDI, a sticking EGR valve, a blocked DPF or a boost leak are the usual causes. We read the codes and live data to find which one, rather than guessing.
- Can you clean an EGR valve rather than replace it?
- Often, yes. If the valve and its motor still work and the carbon can be removed, a clean is good value. If the motor or position sensor has failed, a new valve is the better fix.
- Is it legal to remove the DPF?
- No. Removing a DPF from a car that had one is illegal and it will fail the MOT. We clean, regenerate or replace DPFs, but we do not remove them.
