Why book with us
VW Transporter Servicing & Repairs Smethwick with clear advice.
The Transporter is a favourite with tradespeople, delivery drivers and people who have turned one into a day van. We work on every version from the early T5 through the T5.1, T6 and T6.1, as well as the smaller Caddy and the bigger Crafter. Servicing, fault finding, clutch work, brakes and emissions repairs are all done in our workshop on Cranford Street, Smethwick.
Each generation has its own habits. The 2.5 TDI in early T5s is a strong engine but wears with age. The 2.0 TDI common rail fitted from 2009 can suffer EGR valve and cooler problems and blocked particulate filters, especially on vans doing short local work. Euro 6 T6 vans add AdBlue, which needs proper diagnosis when it goes wrong. Clutches and dual-mass flywheels take a hammering on all of them.
We use diagnostic equipment that reads Volkswagen systems properly, so we can see what the engine, DPF and AdBlue controls are actually reporting. We test before we replace anything, then call you with a clear quote. You decide what goes ahead. If we spot something that is not urgent, we tell you so you can plan for it rather than finding out at the next MOT.
Your van is how you earn, so we try to keep the time it is off the road short. Book the service and MOT together and we can do both in one visit. Andrae has run ER Automotive in Smethwick for over ten years, and many vans from West Bromwich, Oldbury and Bearwood come back to us year after year.
We carry out Class 4 and Class 7 MOTs, so we can test any Transporter or Crafter up to 3,500kg. To book your VW van in, or to talk through a warning light or noise, call us on 0121 461 6097. We are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm. Give us your registration and we will check the service schedule and timing belt history before the van comes in, so we have the right parts ready.

Common questions
- Do you work on all Transporter generations?
- Yes. We service and repair the T5, T5.1, T6 and T6.1, along with the Caddy and Crafter. Each has different engines and service needs, so we check the schedule for your van by its registration before we start. If your van has had a conversion or extra equipment fitted, let us know when you book.
- Does my Transporter need a fixed or a variable service?
- Volkswagen vans can be set up for either. Fixed servicing suits vans doing lots of short runs and towing, while variable servicing suits vans covering steady long miles. We can tell you which your van is set to and service it to the right schedule with the correct oil.
- My T5.1 or T6 has gone into limp mode. What could it be?
- On the 2.0 TDI the usual suspects are the EGR valve, a blocked DPF, a boost leak or a faulty sensor. We read the codes, check live data and test the parts involved, so you pay to fix the real fault and not a guess.
- When does the timing belt need changing on a Transporter?
- It depends on the engine and year, and the interval can be a set number of years as well as miles. If you do not have a record of it being done, it is worth treating it as due. We can check the history and quote for a belt and water pump together.
- Can you MOT my Transporter or Crafter?
- Yes. We test Class 4 vans up to 3,000kg and Class 7 goods vehicles from 3,000kg to 3,500kg. Most Transporters fall into Class 4, and heavier Crafters into Class 7. Either way we can test it here. Your V5C or the plate in the door shut shows the design gross weight if you want to check.
- Will using you affect my VW warranty?
- No. Block exemption rules mean an independent garage can service your van without affecting the manufacturer warranty, as long as the work follows the schedule and uses parts and oils of the right specification. We stamp the book and keep a record of what was done.
- Can you service a Transporter that has been converted into a camper?
- We can service the base vehicle: engine, brakes, suspension, steering and the rest of the running gear. Gas, leisure batteries and habitation equipment are not something we work on, so those need a separate habitation check. We are happy to talk it through on the phone first.
- How do I book my VW van in?
- Call us on 0121 461 6097 or book online. Give us your registration and a short description of the problem. We are on Cranford Street in Smethwick, open Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm. Book the MOT at the same time and the van only comes in once. If you are not sure what is wrong, describe what you hear, feel or see on the dash and we will take it from there.
