Since Vauxhall became part of the same group as Peugeot and Citroen, many of its petrol cars use the 1.2 PureTech three-cylinder engine. You will find it in the Corsa F from 2019, the Grandland X, Crossland X and the newer Mokka, in both non-turbo and 1.2 Turbo forms. Like the Ford EcoBoost, it drives the camshafts with a belt that runs in the engine oil.
The known problem is the belt breaking down early. Fragments of belt end up in the sump, where they can block the oil pickup and cause low oil pressure. On this engine, debris can also reach the vacuum pump that powers the brake servo, which is why some owners see a brake assist warning and a hard pedal. Higher oil consumption on some engines makes it worse, because the oil level drops and the oil ages faster.
Ignoring it is expensive. A blocked oil supply can damage the turbo and bearings, and a snapped belt usually means serious engine damage. Replacing the belt, cleaning the sump and pickup, and fitting the correct oil is a fraction of the cost of an engine.
The manufacturer has shortened the belt intervals on these engines, and it now depends on age as well as mileage. We check your registration and service history, look at the belt and the oil, and give you a straight answer on whether the work is needed now.
