Toyota Hybrid Servicing and Repairs

Toyota hybrids such as the Prius, Auris, Yaris, C-HR and Corolla are common across Smethwick and Birmingham, including many used as private hire cars. They are built to last, and many cover very high mileages. They do still need servicing, and there are a few hybrid-specific parts that are easy to forget.

The inverter, which converts power between the hybrid battery and the electric motors, has its own coolant circuit and electric pump. On the second-generation Prius in particular, that pump is a known failure point and was the subject of a Toyota recall on some cars. When it fails, the inverter overheats and the car shows a hybrid system warning and may refuse to drive. The inverter coolant also has its own replacement interval.

Other common issues include a weak 12V auxiliary battery, which stops the car switching to "Ready" even when the hybrid battery is fine, and a blocked hybrid battery cooling fan, often under or beside the rear seat, which makes the battery run hot and wear faster. On the higher-mileage third-generation Prius 1.8, a blocked EGR cooler can cause knocking on start-up and, if ignored, head gasket failure.
