Why book with us
Ford Transit Servicing & Repairs Smethwick with clear advice.
The Transit is the van we see most on Cranford Street. Panel vans, Customs, Connects, tippers and Lutons all come through our workshop, from older Mk7s to the latest EcoBlue models. We service them, read warning lights, replace clutches and flywheels, and do brakes, suspension and steering. Whether you run one van for your own trade or several for a business in Smethwick, West Bromwich or Oldbury, we treat each one as a working tool.
Transits have a few well-known weak spots. The 2.2 TDCi can suffer injector trouble and dual-mass flywheel wear, especially on vans that carry weight in stop-start traffic. EcoBlue engines bring AdBlue systems that can throw warnings even with a full tank, and short local runs are hard on the diesel particulate filter. Knowing these patterns helps us reach the real cause quickly instead of guessing with parts.
We start with a proper look. We read the fault codes, check live data, listen to the van and test the obvious things first. Then we call you with a clear quote and tell you what needs doing now and what can wait. No work goes ahead without your say-so, so there are no surprises on the invoice when you come to collect.
A van off the road costs you money, so we keep things simple. Tell us what the van is doing and when you can spare it, and we will book a time that fits around your work. If a job turns into something bigger once we are into it, we stop and ring you before we go any further. Andrae has run ER Automotive in Smethwick for over ten years, and plenty of local trades have been with us for most of that.
We MOT Transits under both Class 4 and Class 7, so we can test everything from a Connect to a 3.5-tonne high-roof panel van. Book the MOT and service together and the van is only off the road once. To book your Transit in, or talk through a fault, call us on 0121 461 6097. We are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm.

Common questions
- How often should I service my Ford Transit?
- It depends on the engine and year, and many Transits use a variable service reminder. As a rule, a van working every day should be serviced at least once a year or at the mileage Ford sets, whichever comes first. Give us your registration and we will check the right schedule for your van.
- Can you MOT my Transit, even a 3.5-tonne one?
- Yes. We test Class 4 vans up to 3,000kg design gross weight and Class 7 goods vehicles from 3,000kg to 3,500kg. That covers Connects and Customs as well as the bigger high-roof and long-wheelbase Transits. Vans above 3,500kg take a different test at a DVSA testing station.
- My Transit judders when I pull away. What is it?
- On a manual Transit this is often a worn clutch or dual-mass flywheel, especially if there is also a rattle at idle that goes when you press the pedal. It can also be an engine or gearbox mount. We check it properly before quoting, because replacing the clutch alone when the flywheel has failed means doing the job twice.
- Why does my EcoBlue Transit say there is an AdBlue fault?
- AdBlue warnings come from the tank, pump, heater, injector or the NOx sensors in the exhaust, not just a low level. Some faults start a countdown to a no-start, so do not leave it. We read the codes, test the system and tell you which part has actually failed before anything is replaced.
- Will servicing with you affect my Ford warranty?
- No. Under block exemption rules you can have a van serviced at an independent garage without losing the manufacturer warranty, as long as the work follows the schedule and uses parts and oils of the right specification. We record the work and stamp the service book.
- Do you look after more than one van for a business?
- Yes. We service and repair single vans for sole traders and small fleets for local businesses. Each van gets its own clear invoice listing the work done, which makes record keeping easier. Call us to talk through how many vans you run and what suits you.
- Can you sort a DPF warning on my Transit?
- Usually, yes. A DPF warning caught early can often be cleared with a forced regeneration once we have checked why it blocked. If the filter is too far gone it may need cleaning or replacing. Short runs, faulty sensors and EGR problems can all cause it, so we look at the cause as well as the filter.
- How do I book my Transit in?
- Call us on 0121 461 6097 or book online. Tell us your registration, what the van is doing and when you can spare it. We are on Cranford Street in Smethwick, open Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm, and handy for vans from West Bromwich, Oldbury and across Birmingham.
