BMW fitted the N47 2.0 four-cylinder diesel to the 116d, 118d, 120d, 318d, 320d, 520d, X1 and X3 from around 2007 until the newer B47 engine replaced it from about 2014. On the N47 the timing chains are at the back of the engine, next to the gearbox, and the chain and its guides are known to wear early.
The typical sign is a rattle or whirring from the rear of the engine. It is usually loudest at idle when the engine is warm, or when you lift off the accelerator. Some cars rattle for years, others fail with little warning. If the chain snaps, the pistons hit the valves and the engine is usually beyond economic repair.
Because the chains are at the back, the correct repair is to remove the engine, replace the chains, guides, tensioner and sprockets as a kit, and check the related parts while it is out. That makes it a significant job, but it is still much cheaper than a replacement engine, and far cheaper than dealing with a snapped chain.
We listen to the engine, check the service history and oil condition, and use diagnostic data to rule out other noises such as a failing dual-mass flywheel or loose heat shields. If the chain is worn, we give you a full written quote and explain what else is worth doing while the engine is out, so you are not paying for the same labour twice.

- How do I know if my BMW has the N47 engine?
- Most 2.0 diesel BMWs from 2007 to around 2014 have the N47, including the 118d, 120d, 320d, 520d and X3 20d. Call 0121 461 6097 with your registration and we will confirm.
- Can I keep driving with a timing chain rattle?
- We do not recommend it. The chain can fail without further warning, and a snapped chain usually wrecks the engine. Book a check as soon as you notice the noise.
- Does the newer B47 engine have the same problem?
- The B47 that replaced the N47 is generally regarded as much better for timing chain wear. Regular oil changes with the correct oil still help any chain-driven engine.
