The 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI turbo petrol engines fitted to the Audi A4, A5, A6, Q5 and TT from around 2008 to 2012, and to some VW, SEAT and Skoda models, are well known for oil consumption. The main cause is the design of the piston rings used on those earlier engines, which lets oil past into the combustion chamber. A faulty crankcase breather valve can make it worse.
Owners usually notice low oil warnings between services, needing to top up a litre every thousand miles or less, and sometimes blue smoke on start-up. Some cars never show a leak on the drive, because the oil is being burned rather than dripped.
It matters because running low on oil damages the turbo, bearings and timing chain, which is also a known wear item on these engines. Heavy oil burning also carbons up the pistons and can foul the spark plugs and catalytic converter. A car that is topped up diligently can run for years, but one that is allowed to run low can fail suddenly.
We start by confirming the problem: a measured oil use test over a set mileage, a check of the breather system, compression and leak-down tests, and a look for external leaks. The proper fix on an affected engine is revised pistons and rings, which is a major job. For some older, high-mileage cars that is not worth it, and careful monitoring and topping up is the sensible answer. We will tell you honestly which camp your car falls into.

- How much oil use is too much on a 2.0 TFSI?
- A healthy engine should need very little oil between services. If you are adding a litre or more every thousand miles or so, it is worth testing. We measure it properly rather than relying on the dash warning.
- Will an oil additive fix it?
- No additive will change the piston ring design. Some may reduce smoke for a while, but the oil is still getting past. We would rather you knew the real cause.
- Is it worth fixing on an older A4?
