Why Won't My Car Start?

Three failure modes — complete silence, cranks but will not fire, clicks but no crank

When a car will not start, it falls into three categories. Complete silence means the battery or electrical connections are dead. Cranking but no start means the engine is turning over but fuel or ignition is missing. Rapid clicking means the starter motor is weak or the battery is flat. Each has a different fix, and ER Automotive in Smethwick can diagnose it quickly.

Dead battery (complete silence or rapid clicking)

If you turn the key and hear nothing or fast clicking, your battery is likely dead or nearly dead. Try jump-starting from another car with jump leads. If the car fires up, you know it is the battery. Drive straight to our Smethwick garage and we will test the battery (usually free) and either charge it or fit a new one the same day. A car left sitting for months in winter often develops a flat battery.

Starter motor failure (clicks or silence with lights on)

If the dashboard lights come on but the engine does not crank — or you hear a single loud click then silence — the starter motor may be failing. The motor is a heavy-duty solenoid that spins the engine to start it. When it fails, it either does not engage or does not turn. A replacement starter is usually £150–£300 fitted, depending on your car. We will diagnose it with a voltage test and fit a new starter if needed.

Fuel pump or ignition system (engine cranks but will not fire)

If the engine turns over normally but does not ignite, the fuel pump may be dead, the ignition coil may have failed, or a fuel injector may be stuck. Modern cars have electric fuel pumps inside the tank — if one fails, no fuel reaches the engine. We diagnose this with a fuel pressure test and electrical check. Fuel pump replacement usually costs £300–£600 depending on the car. Ignition coil problems are cheaper (£100–£200).

Do not try to start repeatedly when you suspect fuel pump failure — you drain the battery and risk overheating the starter. Call us for diagnostics and we will find the fault without waste.
