Your suspension keeps your car safe on the road

Suspension absorbs bumps and keeps all four wheels in contact with the road. When shocks, springs, bushes, or joints wear out, you will notice it through noise, poor handling, or uneven tyre wear. Worn suspension is a safety issue — longer stopping distances, worse grip in corners, and a higher risk of losing control on wet roads.

Loud knocking over bumps

The most common sign is a loud knock or clunk from underneath when driving over a bump. This is often a worn shock absorber, top mount, or drop link. A good rule of thumb: if the noise is loud enough to be annoying, it needs attention. Worn shocks reduce your stopping power because the wheels bounce away from the road, so braking distance increases.

We diagnose suspension knocks with a road test and a visual inspection on the ramps. A replacement shock usually costs £80–£200 per corner fitted.

Bouncy or floaty ride

Shocks are designed to damp the spring and stop the car bouncing after a bump. If your car bounces twice for one bump or feels like it is floating over the road, the shocks are worn. This is less urgent than knocking but still worth fixing — poor damping makes the car tiring to drive and unsafe in emergency manoeuvres.

Uneven tyre wear

Worn suspension components allow wheels to move out of alignment, causing one edge of the tyre to wear faster than the other.
