Interim, Full or Major Service: Which Do I Need?

Interim service: every 6 months or 6,000 miles

An interim service is a top-up between full services. It covers an engine oil and filter change, fluid top-ups, and safety checks on the tyres, brakes, lights and suspension.

It suits drivers who do high mileage, such as commuters, delivery drivers and anyone clocking up motorway miles, where a year between oil changes is too long.

Full service: every 12 months or 12,000 miles

A full service is the one most cars need once a year. Along with everything in an interim service, it adds more checks, around 40 in total, and replaces the air filter and other items that are due on your car's schedule.

If you only have one service a year, this is the one to have. We stamp your service book so the history is kept up to date.

Major service: every 24 months or 24,000 miles

A major service is the most thorough, with around 60 checks. It includes everything in a full service plus the longer-interval items that are due, which can include the fuel filter, spark plugs, cabin filter and brake fluid, depending on the car.

Many drivers alternate: a full service one year and a major service the next.

What if my car tells me when it needs a service?

Many newer cars have a service indicator that works out when a service is due based on how the car is driven. Follow it, along with the schedule in your handbook, and tell us what the dashboard says when you book.

Servicing at an independent garage does not affect your manufacturer warranty, as long as the service follows the schedule and uses the right parts and oil.
