How Often Should Brake Fluid Be Changed?

Most cars need it every two years

Most manufacturers recommend changing brake fluid every two years, whatever the mileage. Some cars differ, so your handbook or service book is the final word. It is often done as part of a major service.

Because it goes by time rather than miles, it is one of the jobs that gets missed on cars that do low mileage.

Why brake fluid wears out

Brake fluid slowly absorbs moisture from the air. Over time that water lowers the temperature the fluid boils at. Under heavy braking, such as a long downhill stretch or a hard stop from speed, the fluid can get hot enough to form bubbles.

Bubbles squash where fluid does not, so the pedal goes soft and the car takes longer to stop, right when you need it most. Water in the fluid also causes corrosion inside the brake pipes, callipers and ABS unit.

Signs your brake fluid needs attention

A spongy or soft brake pedal, a pedal that sinks further than it used to, or a brake warning light are all reasons to get the brakes checked straight away. Fluid that has turned dark brown is also a sign it is old.

If the level in the reservoir keeps dropping, that can be worn pads, but it can also be a leak. A brake fluid leak is a safety problem, so do not just keep topping it up.

What a proper brake fluid change involves

A proper change flushes the old fluid out of the whole system, not just the reservoir, using the correct fluid type for your car. Each wheel is bled in turn so no air is left in the lines.
