Why Is My Car Pulling to One Side?

Three reasons your car drifts or pulls

If your car drifts to the left or right when you are not holding the wheel, or you have to grip the wheel firmly to go straight, something is out of balance. The three most common causes are uneven tyre pressure, brake drag from a seized caliper, or misaligned wheels.

Uneven tyre pressure (easiest fix)

Check tyre pressures on all four wheels with a pressure gauge. If one or two are low, inflate them to the recommended pressure (check your driver door jamb label or handbook). Uneven pressure makes the softer tyre absorb more, causing the car to pull toward the firmer side.

In Smethwick, we check tyre pressures for free during any service. If you have a slow puncture on one side, we will find it with a soap test and repair or replace the tyre — usually the same day.

Brake drag (seized caliper)

A caliper piston stuck in the partially applied position will drag that brake, slowing that wheel and pulling the car toward it. This feels like the brakes are slightly on all the time and the car pulls hard during braking. We diagnose brake drag with a road test and wheel spin check — the dragging side will be noticeably hotter. Fixing it means cleaning the caliper piston or replacing the caliper (£150–£400 per wheel).

Wheel alignment (tracking) out of spec

If tyres are even and brakes feel normal, misalignment is the likely cause. This happens after kerb damage, pothole hits, or suspension work. The wheels point slightly inward or outward instead of straight ahead. We have alignment equipment and can measure and adjust your tracking to manufacturer spec. An alignment check takes 30 minutes and usually costs £60–£120. Do not ignore pulling — misaligned wheels wear tyres fast and affect safety.
