Do I Need to Change My Antifreeze Before Winter?

What antifreeze actually does

Antifreeze (coolant) is mixed with water and pumped around your engine. It stops the water freezing in winter and boiling in summer, and it contains additives that protect the engine, radiator and water pump from corrosion.

If the mix is too weak, the coolant can freeze on a cold night. Frozen coolant expands, and that can crack a radiator, split a hose or, in the worst case, damage the engine block.

Antifreeze wears out over time

Even if the level looks fine, the protective additives break down with age. Old coolant stops protecting against corrosion, and rust and scale can build up inside the cooling system, leading to overheating and leaks.

Most modern coolants are designed to last several years, but the interval varies by car. Your handbook or service history will give the recommended change interval for your engine.

How to check your coolant level

With the engine cold, open the bonnet and find the coolant expansion tank, a see-through plastic bottle with MIN and MAX marks. The level should sit between the two. Never open the cap on a hot engine, as the system is under pressure.

If you are topping up regularly, there is a leak somewhere. Coolant loss can be a simple hose, but it can also point to a water pump or head gasket problem, so it is worth getting looked at.

Why the right coolant type matters

Coolants come in different formulations and colours, and they are not all compatible. Mixing the wrong types can make the coolant less effective and, in some cases, cause sludge to form. Topping up with plain water in an emergency is fine for a short while, but it weakens the mix.
